Ross County 4 Greenock Morton 0
Manager Stuart Kettlewell asks for more of the same as County sweep past Morton to take the relegation fight to the final fixture after a clinical show in Dingwall.
Ross County roared to their biggest Championship win of the season – but their 4-0 rout of Morton wasn’t enough to take them off bottom spot.
Airdrieonians’ 2-1 comeback win against Ayr United keeps them one point and one place above County before Stuart Kettlewell’s side travel to mid-table Raith Rovers on Friday.
Eighth-placed Morton are not out of the relegation scrap after this thumping result, sitting just two points clear of Airdrie and three points in front of County. Morton and Airdrie meet at Cappielow on Friday, so it’s all to play for all round.
The visitors’ fans vented their fury towards their players at full-time after this meek display, but there’s a sense of hope, even now for County.
Central defender Akil Wright headed County into an early lead, which was soon added to by a low drive from Jordan White.
Noah Chilvers, who is just back from a year out with injury, added a third goal just after half-time and on-loan Aberdeen midfielder Ryan Duncan put further gloss on the final scoreline.
This was the first time this term County had posted back-to-back league victories, following on from last week’s 2-1 home win against Ayr United.
‘We need to do the same next week’
Kettlewell was delighted that his players delivered the type of performance they required to keep their survival bid alive. A defeat here today would have relegated them.
He said: “The result was the most important thing like last week, but we had to approach the game in the right fashion.
“We started really well and rode out some tough moments that we knew would come. We defended well and looked like a real threat.
“Confidence is a wonderful thing, and the way I’ve just said it to them there is that we started to see what their super-strengths are.
“That has been a challenge, but all the guys who started and came off the bench, we started to see the qualities they have and it clicked today.
“It’s only another victory, and we have to reset our minds to go and try to do the same next week.
“Nobody needs to remind us the position we’re in, but we had to try and back something up this week.
“We couldn’t just settle for getting a good result last week. A lot of people would argue we’re way down the line in the season to be doing this now, but we’re not going to roll over.
“As long as we’re still in with a fighting chance we’re going to approach it the best we can, and that’s what we did today.”
‘Our strikers were both involved in goals, so it starts to breed confidence’And the manager explained how having the players express themselves was the key to getting the win in such style.
He added: “The guys in midfield certainly provided a bit of quality, and Ryan Duncan got a goal and an assist again.
“Our strikers were both involved in goals, so it starts to breed confidence.
“We have to drag away all the pressure to let the players express themselves, and we’ve been guilty of being in a rat race at times.
“There’s not any cohesion in a game of football like that, but when we trust our passing good things tend to happen.
“We won’t be jumping about thinking we’ve done anything, we need to focus on what comes next.
“That starts with recovery, continues on Monday and into next week when we focus on the next game.”
Two early goals put County in control
Stuart Kettlewell made just one change from the side which beat Ayr United 2-1, with White replacing on-loan Middlesbrough forward Jayden Carbon.
Morton have suffered similarly poor results to County since the turn of the year when Ian Murray came in to replace now Raith Rovers manager Dougie Imrie.
The Ton had taken seven points from a possible nine against the Highlanders, including the 2-1 victory in late January being Murray’s first win in charge.
