Arbroath 3 Ross County 0
Arbroath moved back to third place in the Championship table after comfortably dispatching Ross County at a breezy Gayfield Park on Saturday afternoon.
Harry Cochrane set the Lichties on their way with his first goal for the club before Jacob MacIntyre also notched his maiden strike in maroon and Taylor Steven added gloss to the scoreline in a 3-0 win against the Staggies.
Nikolay Todorov and Cochrane both returned to the starting lineup in the two changes from last weekend’s disappointing loss in Airdrie, as Ryan Dow was rested and Gavin Reilly also dropped to the bench.
It was a bright start from Colin Hamilton and David Gold’s men, who had an Aaron Muirhead header fly wide early on as a warning sign for County. The Highland side didn’t heed that warning however and found themselves a goal behind after just eight minutes.
Steven picked the ball up on the right and saw his attempted cross loop towards Cochrane on the edge of the area, with the midfielder bringing the ball down well before sending an inch perfect effort flying in to the corner, leaving Trevor Carson with absolutely no chance.
The visitors had the wind at their backs in a first half that often felt a bit disrupted due to the breeze and persistent whistling from the referee, and as such, rarely threatened the Arbroath goal. Conor Randall saw his effort deflected over by Jack Wilkie, while Ronan Hale tried to add to his tally of six league goals, but could only shoot straight at Aidan McAdams.
Alex Iacovitti and Nikolay Todorov were spoken to multiple times for their constant grappling throughout the opening period, with the County centre back booked towards the end of a half where Arbroath more than merited their lead.
Just like in the first period, Arbroath came flying out of the traps after the restart and created several early chances. Wilkie was first to go close as he nodded wide from a set piece, before Findlay Marshall was denied by Carson and Steven fired into the side netting at the end of the attack.
On 56 minutes though, the second goal did come. Arbroath’s high press had been causing the County backline a number of problems and it finally paid off as Akil Wright lost possession to MacIntyre, with the Hibs loanee cutting inside before drilling a low shot beyond Carson.
Randall was County’s unlikely attacking threat, and he almost used the wind to his advantage to find a way back into the game for the Staggies, seeing his header loop up in the air and back to him for a second time where he managed to nod the ball over.
Arbroath put the game beyond any doubt with 12 minutes remaining however, as MacIntyre raced clear down the left before picking out Steven in the middle who stayed calm to slot home number three and get the Lichties back to winning ways.
